TRAINING ON THE CREATION OF PLANTATIONS WITH ASSOCIATED CROPS (CASE OF MEDICINAL PLANTS) IN DONGA MANTUNG DIVISION

This workshop was organised in the context of the call for applications launched by the Chamber of Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock and Forests of Cameroon (CAPEF) for motivated experts to deliver to participants in a 3-day training on the creation of plantations with associated crops. Following the pre-selection and final selection, Mr Nkeng Pius was assigned to conduct the training. The said training effectively took place as prescribed from June 29th to July 1st, 2022. This is in line with the new working orientations of CAPEF to effectively foster and pursue its missions and service delivery to farmers and adherents.

Service Provider to the Food and Agricultural (2016-2018).

NDEF worked on a Organisation, FAO Cameroon project tittled: «Projet de renforcement des relations commerciales entre les petits acteurs et les acheteurs dans le secteur des racines et tubercules en Afrique». The project started in 2016 through 2017 and 2018. NDEF worked in partnership with the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) Cameroon, for the Organization of business meetings, support for the elaboration of business plans, training, coaching and monitoring of beneficiaries in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon (i.e. L’organisation des réunionsd’affaires, l’appui à l’élaboration des plans d’affaires, les formations et le coaching et suivi des bénéficiairesdans les régions Nord-ouest et sud-ouest du Cameroun). In this project, we trained farmers and dealers in the cassava-garri production chain, Business Planning and Operations Management. They were trained on how to do farming as a business, good planning, keeping the right records and generating the right reports. Two major trainings took place in Mbengwi and in Mamfe. Many follow up and coaching sessions were carried out with the groups to ensure the success of their activities. The main objective of the work was to organise a series of meetings with the stakeholders involved in the value chain of cassava-garri so as to assess the factors which affect the functioning of the chain, in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon. Our sample was focused on two locations being Besongabang (Mamfe), in the South West and Mbengwi in the North West. In 2018, activities took off with an evaluation of progress. The findings have been used to update the respective business plans of the social enterprises. More trainings and coaching sessions are programmed with these entrepreneurs to ensure that their businesses are run successfully.

Promotion of Agroforestry with the World Agroforestry Centre

NDEF negotiated a partnership with the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) Yaounde from the year 2005. ICRAF has been a long time standing and technical partner NDEF wherein ICRAF has supported our agroforestry activities. ICRAF provided technical, financial and equipment support towards our extension works in agroforestry. Their support assisted NDEF to accelerate and follow up clients’ activities in the field. ICRAF has trained NDEF staff with the techniques of rapidly multiplying fruit tree seedlings for field planting. Such high value tree seedlings bear fruits in just two to three years. Specifically, ICRAF has trained NDEF on the techniques of grafting, marcoting, rooting of cuttings and budding. This has continued to be the foundation of our work and we have served as a trainer to many farming groups in this domain. Implemented a project titled Introduction of “Forest Gardens” to increase farm benefits and mitigate effects of climate change, sponsored by New England Biolabs Foundation, USA in 2011

Alleviating rural poverty by promoting integrated and sustainable agroforestry in the North West Province of Cameroon

sponsored by Broederlijk Delen of Belgium and implemented by NDEF from 2008 to 2009. The project targeted groups of farmers in twelve communities. The specific objectives of the project were: o Train small scale farmers how to design and integrate various agroforestry systems on their farmlands. o Train small scale farmers to adopt different techniques to successfully manage and improve soil fertility problems on their farms. o Build technical capacities of farmers to propagate and integrate good seed materials. o Build managerial capacities of beneficiary groups. o Build strategic alliances with other partners to better serve the target groups

Integration of “working trees” for poverty alleviation and increased livelihoods

sponsored by the International Union for Nature Conservation (IUCN) of the Netherlands (2009-2010). This project had main activities as follows. o Use modern tree propagation techniques to produce good tree planting materials. o Integrate “working trees” in the farm observing compatibility and uses of the tree species. o Integrate bee farming activities (apiary development, management, harvesting, processing, etc). o Organise special training sessions with local farmers to accomplish activities on the farm. o Harvest and market farm produce for income generation and sustainability.

Service Provider to the Grassfield, Participatory and Decentralised Rural Development Project (GP -DERUDEP)

We have been working as a service provider to GP-DERUDEP wherein we supplied and planted twenty thousand (20.000) forestry seedlings in the Pinyin Community in projects to protect and manage water sources in the area.

Negotiated a partnership with Trees for the Future, an American NGO

As an empowering organisation, we have been implementing projects with farmers, following up their activities and reporting to stakeholders. We follow up their activities in the field on a regular basis, putting them through in the process of developing their projects.

Partnership with the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture

NDEF gained technical knowledge in multiplying plantain plantlets using the PIF Method from the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Yaounde and now train and follow up farmers for the rapid multiplication of clean plantain plantlets. We have been applying their research results to train farmers to produce qualitative and quantitative planting materials to increase their farm yields.

Social Relief Activities to orphans and physically disabled persons

We have worked with Motherland Academy International from 2002 to 2012 during which period this partner supplied relief materials for us to impact the lives of young orphans and venerable populations in the North West Region. Beneficiaries have included young orphans, victims of the Lake Nyos Gas disaster and physically challenged persons in villages.
